3 years ago, I was on my lunch break and decided to go to one of my favorite fast food places, Chick-fil-A. When I got to the window, I requested a large container of Chick-fil-A sauce to go with my meal. I proceeded then to find a parking spot and eat my lunch.
While I was eating, I began to browse through Facebook, and came across pictures of my brother's wedding, in which I was the best man. I was mortified. The wedding was absolutely beautiful, but what I saw was an obese and unhealthy version of me that I had worked so hard up to that point to ignore. I couldn't believe it. Was that really me? And before I knew it, I was done with my lunch and saw that I had eaten that entire container of sauce...and I KNEW something needed to change.
1 Corinthians 6:12 says, “’I have the right to do anything,’ you say—but not everything is beneficial. ‘I have the right to do anything’—but I will not be mastered by anything.”
And then again in 1 Corinthians 6:20, “…you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”
What I discovered is that TRUE freedom was not the ability to do whatever I wanted, eat whatever I wanted, and treat my body in any which way I saw fit. Rather TRUE freedom is what St. Augustine described when he said, “Humans were created in the image of God. True freedom, then, is not found in moving away from that image but only in living it out."
Thus began a 3-year journey that is still going strong today. 100 pounds later, I’ve created a lifestyle of change with TRUE freedom leading the way…being who I was made to be.
And so can you.
